In the Visual Design course at UC Berkeley Extension we were tasked with creating a fictitious company or foundation and special event based on an influential person. I chose Mahatma Gandhi.
With lots of research and knowing that 2019 would be the 150th year of Gandhi’s birth, I was motivated to make the event and supporting company a touring festival that honored Gandhi with music, dance, speakers, and activities.
We started the process by creating a Mood Board – a collection of images and text to help inspire design ideas.
I started with some brainstorm sketching by hand and jotted down some key words to get the ideas flowing.
After some initial sketchbook work, I started to create logo ideas in Illustrator. The logos were way too busy and needed to be refined.
I was very drawn to the spinning wheel in this well-known photo of Gandhi as a possible icon for the logo. I traced it and incorporated it into the final design.
The name of the festival was also changed from “Good Heart” to “Great Soul.”
Here’s the logo incorporated into a company corporate identity kit.
I created a proposal that outlined the factors that will influence the design of the poster, such as, intended audience, tone of voice, and the main message to be communicated.
Rough poster sketches were created on an iPad Mini using Tayasui Sketches Pro.
I liked Gandhi’s relaxed posture in the photo on the left (but not the scowl) and his beaming smile on the right, so I decided to combine them to create the illustration for the poster.
Our last design for this project was a website. We could choose a desktop page or mobile device.
I did sketches for an iPad using Adobe Comp, but eventually settled on a design for a phone.
